What is it all about

Tomorrow is a day called All Saints. Tonight is a night in older days called All Hallows Eve (hallows means saints, which means holy people. Make sense?), and All Hallows Eve has been shortened to the more famous Halloween. That was a rather long, and maybe strange introduction to the question, what is Halloween all about?

Halloween as we know it today is a commersialized melting pot of the Chiristian day of All saints, when all who have died in the faith of Jesus is remembered, how this day is celebrated in Mexico (the famous Day of the dead) and the celtic new year. Confused? It´s easy to get confused, but let´s have a look.

The Mexican Day of the dead is when people dress up in masks so the dead won´t recognize them, because they are afraid that the dead will haunt them and do evil things in their lives.

The Celtic new year was, according to the old celtic religion the day when our world was closest to "The other side", which meant that evil spirits could enter our world. To avoid unwanted visits, the old celts wore masks, and they also carved out a pumkin and put a candle in it, to keep the spirits away.

Then what about All Saints? This is a day when Christians remember those who have died in the faith of Jesus. The day is actually a celebration of all these good people, and that they through their faith have passed through death, into life in God. All Saints is actually a day when we celebrate life, and when we also remember that in Jesus, we don´t have to worry about evil spirits or walking dead people. And what is that all about you might ask? It has all to do about Jesus, and not about monsters, ghosts and skeletons. Jesus=life.

Tonight at Xpressions, there will be more about Halloween and Jesus. 7-9pm. All are welcome.
